6. Can I update my own site?
Yes, by using CMS (Content Management Systems) you can but you need to ask yourself a few questions
• do I really want to?
• will I be comfortable doing this?
Without ever having tried it, there are those that have the pre-conceived notion that anyone and everyone can work in a CMS environment. This isn’t always the case. For some people it’s not as simple a task as it is for others. It’s a matter of what the individual can handle comfortably. Your friend may be a math whiz, but you may not get along well with your checkbook. It’s as simple as that.
I’d like to discuss some important things for or you to consider about maintaining your own site. My hope is that you’ll be able to make a more informed decision when you’re finished reading.

9. Will my website design be" Search Engine" friendly?
We will develop your site using keywords which will optimized your site. Search engine spiders feed on keywords and this is what powers your listing on site engine like Google and Bing.
1. Research highly targeted keywords - do this even before you begin designing otherwise you may have to go back and clean up some of your web site design. Use the keyword research tool, Keyword Discovery (KeywordDiscovery.com) to research the most popular keywords that pertain to the subject matter of your web site. Keyword Discovery will show how many people have searched for that particular keyword over several search engines within the last 12 months.
2. Create a list of approximately 100 keywords or keyword phrases that you can include within your web pages. After having completed the above research, you should have found the keywords that were searched on most frequently, but only produce a small number of competing web sites.
3. Write a paragraph of 250 - 500 words of text for the top of each web page. Weave your keywords within this text being careful not have them so close together that your copy reads strange for your visitors. Aim to please the search engines as well as your web site visitors.
4. Optimize meta tags - the most significant meta tags are the title and description meta tags. The keyword meta tag has lost its effectiveness due to people spamming it, however include it anyway as some search engines still use it. Include your keywords within each of these meta tags. The title meta tag should be a short sentence about the purpose of your site. In your description meta tag, write a sentence on the greatest benefit of your site. Your keyword meta tag should include the most frequently used keywords contained within your web page.
5. Include Heading Tags - these can range form H1-H6 most designers will only use H1-H3. These tags separate each section of your web page with subheadings. The H1 tag contains the largest font and is the most significant. Within the descriptive text of these header tags you should include the keyword phrases placed in the same order as your keyword phrases that are within your keyword meta tags.
6. Optimize images using the alt tag - write a short description for the alt tag of your image. The alt tag has 2 purposes:

11. How do I update my website?
There are many different methods which can be used to update websites. The method you choose and the functionality we build into your website design is solely up to yourself although of course we will be glad to advise you which method will suit your needs.
If you have a small website consisting of just a few pages and will only wish to make changes very infrequently, then usually it is more cost effective simply to ask GCW to carry out these changes for you. Other methods which are frequently chosen are largely dependant upon how much data or information and pictures you have and how you store this information at present.
We can provide an on line content management system where you can either update individual products/pages/services or particular sections of your website. e.g. company news.
Alternatively we can provide functionality such that you can upload your entire product ranges to the website in one action using spreadsheets etc. We can also add databases if you wish.

13. What is the difference between a “static” and a “dynamic” site?
A static site is one that is written in HTML only. Each page is a separate document and there is no database that it draws on. What this means functionally is that the only way to edit the site is to go into each page and edit the HTML - so you'd either have to do it yourself using a webpage editor like FrontPage or pay me to go in and edit the site each time you wanted something changed.
A dynamic site is written using more complex code and can do a lot more. For instance, I can make an area where you can log in and change various parts of the site, such as adding information or products. This is because each page is constructed based on the information in a database, and the information in that database can be changed via another interface.
Dynamic sites can reduce ongoing maintenance costs if you don't want to change things yourself with a webpage editor or with the HTML. They usually cost more to develop, as they require more complex coding and a content management utility needs to be developed to help you manage your website information.
Another benefit of dynamic sites is that they allow you to change only the content of the site and not the design, so you will not be able to accidentally break the visual style of the site. They have other benefits when sites start to get very large, as they make data management much more efficient and your site more expandable.
Many clients do a combination, having some dynamic areas such as a product catalog where they have to change information or pictures regularly, and leave other pages such as contact information as static pages.

14. How do I get more traffic from search engines?
Research and decide on the best keywords to aim for, ones that people use to search for what you are offering. The site that is best for this is the Pixelfast Overture Tool. You can see how many people search for a phrase on the right and what people bid for a term on the left. Ideally you find a term that is searched for a good amount, but is not bid on overly much, or the market will be oversaturated. You can try a number of different keywords to get an idea of the market. You will also want to search for the phrase on Google to see what your competition is for optimizing for that keyword. If you search for blue widgets and the first 10 results have that exact phrase in the title, that the phrase is over-optimized. If most of the results just have those keywords in the content somewhere, then you've got a winner (as long as people do search for that phrase). Don't despair if you can't find a phrase for your site that is both searched for and not over-optimized. Just choose a few good ones and start optimizing - you can still use them, you'll just have to work a bit harder.
Create pages that are focused on each particular keyword phrase. For instance if your keyword phrase was blue widgets, you would want to create a page that is called "Blue Widgets". The page would be about blue widgets and include the keyword phrase a few times in the copy (but don't overdo it). You would create a page like this for each of the keyword phrases you were targeting, and add these pages to the site. Within your page, make sure your keyword phrase is in the title tag in the header, and in an H1 header tag as well.
Get incoming links using the keyword text. A great way to do this is to exchange links with other sites in related fields and request that they link to you with the keywords in the link text. For instance you could ask them to link to your "Blue Widgets" page by creating the link with the text "Blue Widgets" as the linked text (the clickable, underlined text). In exchange you would have a page on your site called Partners or Resources and you would link to their site. You should also pursue "widget" directories where you can submit your link (these often require link-backs too) and/or paid directories where they link to your site for a fee. Each link to your page counts as a "vote" for your page. Links with text that matches your keyword phrase for that page count more. These "votes" add up to PageRank, which Google uses predominantly to establish the rank of your page on the search engine results. Along the same lines, be sure to use text links within your site to link to the various pages you've created.
Wait and refine. Search engine positioning takes time. And do some research to learn more about what you can do to optimize your site - Webmaster World is a good start.
